ARC Innovation at Sheba Medical Center Joins Consortium of Healthcare Leaders, Expanding the Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (TRAIN)

RAMAT GAN, Israel – May 07, 2024 – ARC Innovation at Sheba Medical Center, Israel’s largest medical center and a Newsweek ranked World’s Best Hospital for the last six years, announced today its participation in the recently launched Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (TRAIN), a consortium of healthcare leaders committed to operationalizing responsible AI practices in healthcare.

AI is reshaping every aspect of healthcare, including patient education and support, diagnostics, precision medicine, decision making, and drug development. However, as AI continues to proliferate, the importance of establishing guidelines and standards to help ensure responsible and effective application of the technology continues to grow.

Unveiled at the annual HIMSS Global Health Conference, the new network is comprised of leading academic healthcare institutions, health systems, and technology providers, including Duke Health, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Microsoft, ARC Innovation at Sheba Medical Center, and others.

“AI is a transforming force within healthcare, with new solutions developed daily, bringing considerable benefits to every aspect of health,” said Professor Eyal Zimlichman, MD, Chief Innovation and Transformation Officer at Sheba Medical Center and Founder and Director of ARC Innovation. “In order to effectively implement AI technologies, innovation must be balanced with responsibility and trust. AI cannot be implemented without safeguards, and only through rigorous quality and safety controls can health systems adopt these new solutions.”

TRAIN members will collaborate to enhance the quality and reliability of AI in healthcare by sharing best practices, enabling registration of AI used for clinical care through a secure online portal, and providing resources for assessing outcomes of AI implementation, while ensuring privacy preservation throughout the deployment phases. The consortium will also support the establishment of a federated national AI outcomes registry to document real-world results concerning algorithm effectiveness, safety, and refinement.

“We are delighted to welcome Sheba Medical Center as part of TRAIN,” said Dr. Michael Pencina, Chief Data Scientist for Duke Health. “Known for their innovative spirit and alignment with other partners on the principles of trustworthy and responsible AI, Sheba Medical Center will be an important part of our network, helping lead the way in developing and evaluating most innovative technologies that improve patient care and alleviate clinician burden.”

“It is imperative that health systems across the world work together to ensure the trustworthy and responsible use of AI in healthcare via shared approaches to validation and algorithmovigilance,” said Peter J. Embi, M.D., M.S, Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation at VUMC. “Adding Sheba Medical Center’s leadership and expertise to TRAIN will further strengthen our collective ability to enable effective, safe and equitable health AI for people and populations around the globe.”

“Sheba Medical Center is an international leader in the study and application of AI in healthcare and already collaborates closely with several U.S. healthcare organizations on AI initiatives,” said Dr. David Rhew, Global Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Healthcare, Microsoft. “It is a natural fit for Sheba Medical Center to join TRAIN as we strive towards operationalizing responsible AI principles to benefit people across the globe.”
