Course Structure:

The course comprises frontal lectures, consultations, and guidance to formulate a research objective, including developing methods to test that objective.
During the course, each participant will identify a topic in the clinical field s/he wants to research and present a research proposal. The last two sessions of the course are dedicated to presenting research proposals in front of the other participants, including the research topic, the objectives and the methodology of the research.

Background

An increasing number of studies are conducted by nursing staff in the outpatient and hospital setting. A significant amount of these studies are implementable and have great importance in promoting quality of treatment and better well-being. However, performing such studies requires skill, experience and knowledge of the standard rules that we aim to provide in this course.

Main Objectives

To propose a research question

To improve knowledge in planning and performing implementable research in nursing

To promote knowledge of writing for publishing

To become acquainted with topics associated with ethics, the Helsinki Committee, intellectual property, innovation, marketing, and branding.

To become acquainted with topics related to ethics in publishing, the Helsinki Committee, and innovation.

To promote knowledge and tools for writing a research proposal, a grant application, a summary report and an academic research paper.

Course Coordinator:

Dr. Hana Kerzman RN, MSc, PhD

Dr. Hana Kerzman is the senior coordinator for nursing research at Sheba Medical Center. She has been a member of the nursing management at Sheba for over 25 years and a partner in establishing nursing policies and work plans in research.
Dr. Kerzman is responsible for planning and promoting research among the nursing staff, conducting a workshop to enhance knowledge on planning and conducting research – “Research and publish, research and apply”. She counsels nurses in publishing in international academic journals and presenting at local and international conferences.
Dr. Kerzman is responsible for acquiring resources for nursing research and submitting applications for awards and research grants to academic and governmental bodies. Under her leadership, Sheba’s nursing management won eight grants and has had its studies published in academic journals and professional conferences in Israel and abroad.
Dr. Kerzman promotes nursing research nationally, participating in the founding board of the Research Association in Nursing in Israel. She undertakes academic teaching programs at the Tel Aviv University nursing department and Haifa University, in nursing research, critical reading, and scientific writing.

  • Challenges in research methods: “Have we tested the what and the who we wanted to test?”
  • Methodical reading, getting acquainted with databases and search strategies: “Learn to swim in a sea of material”
  • Challenges in research methods, databases: “The effort was put in, but it was in vain”
  • The search for sources of funding and getting acquainted with the principles of writing proposals: “Funding – an advantage”
  • Getting acquainted with the rules of presenting data in a research paper: “There are many ways”
  • What do you start with, and how do you finish? Stages in writing an article for publication: “From the titles to the acknowledgments”:
  • Choosing a journal for publishing and everything about the publication process: “Where to publish”
  • Common critique by reviewers and research limitations: “Reviewers – what are they checking?”
  • Ethical problems in planning, execution and publication of research : “When, who to consult with, and who to share with?”
