Doctor on Call: Prof. Mark Weiser Shares Three Crucial Steps to Support Mental Health
In the new Doctor on Call video, Prof. Mark Weiser points out that exercise is one of the most powerful ways to enhance mental outlook and overall well-being.
He explained that to fully enjoy its benefits, physical activity must be intense enough to raise the heart rate and induce sweating. While walking the dog or taking the stairs is surely beneficial, more intense exercise is what makes the difference.
“I can tell you personally that if I don’t exercise for more than a day or two, I get all grumpy and pessimistic and not happy with life,” he added, using his own experience to illustrate the point.
Developing insight and personal responsibility
Another critical tip Prof. Weiser highlighted is the importance of insight, or honest self-reflection.
“The way we’re built, we have a tendency to blame the world for our problems,” he adds.
While external pressures are real, he noted that taking a moment to ask, “Where am I, and what’s my contribution to all of this?” can be transformative.
He explained that too often, people place blame on external factors, whether it be colleagues, bosses, or life circumstances, while the source of resilience lies in taking personal responsibility. Although difficult to practice, insight can shift perspective from helplessness toward proactive change.
The importance of asking for help
Finally, Prof. Weiser addressed the stigma that still surrounds mental health, urging people not to hesitate when professional support is needed. He emphasized that reaching out to experts can provide meaningful relief and guidance.
“The third mental health tip is don’t be afraid to ask for help… It’s okay to come to us, and we can really help,” he underlines.
Prof. Weiser acknowledged that while not every problem has a simple solution, the act of seeking help is a courageous and critical first step on the path to recovery. This emphasis on normalizing professional support is vital for improving overall mental health outcomes in the community.
