Forever Affected By What They Saw & Heard

30 hostages and one dog…

No other hospital in Israel, or the world for that matter, treated as many of the returning hostages from the pure hell of 50 plus days of Gazan imprisonment by Hamas, as Sheba’s medical and support staff did.

The team, led by Prof. Itai Pessach from the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital, treated each and every one of the hostages with maximum tender loving care. But as both Prof. Pessach and his deputy, Dr. Moshe Ashkenazi, told both the Israeli and global media, nothing that they ever learned in medical school prepared them for the horrific stories they encountered from the hostages.

While almost all of the hostages returned in decent physical shape, their harrowing experiences at the hands of the Hamas terrorists, will impact their mental state for months and probably years.

Sheba’s valiant staff did everything they could to make the women and children feel “human” again. From bringing a veterinarian to check on “Bella” the dog (she’s in great shape!), to providing the women with manicures, pedicures, beauty treatments etc., as well as providing the children with an assortment of goodies and hugs, Sheba inspired hope without boundaries.

We can only hope that in the coming days and weeks, more hostages will be released, so that Sheba and other Israeli hospitals can heal their bodies and souls.

As the battles continue to rage in Gaza, we must never forget our gallant soldiers who are risking life and limb to defend our nation.

To date, Sheba has treated nearly 200 injured soldiers in our “Returning to Life” rehab unit and will continue to do so for as long as it takes!
