Ground-Breaking Heart Transplant Provides Patient with a New Lease on Life
The procedure, hailed as a first-of-its-kind in Israel, highlights both the complexity and the promise of using artificial hearts as a bridge to transplantation, and reflects Sheba’s unwavering mission to save lives, even in the most critical and challenging of cases.
The Expert Team and Vision Behind the Success
Artificial hearts are often the only option for patients too ill to wait for a donor organ. By keeping patients alive until transplantation is possible, they serve as a crucial bridge technology. This was precisely the case here: the artificial heart implanted in May allowed the patient to survive long enough to receive a suitable donor heart, turning what was once a temporary solution into a story of survival and hope. It is also a testament to the exceptional precision, collaboration, and leadership of Sheba’s multidisciplinary team, a group of experts whose collective determination transforms cutting-edge technology into life-saving reality.
Prof. Leonid Sternik, Director of the Cardiac Surgery Unit at Sheba, emphasized the significance of the achievement: “This is an extraordinary event. Just three months after a full artificial heart transplant, we were able to transplant a suitable human heart into the same patient. Full artificial heart transplants are among the most advanced procedures in the world, performed in a few leading medical centers – and our ability to perform them at Sheba places us at the forefront of the world. Sheba currently leads the most advanced treatment for heart failure patients, combining groundbreaking innovation with complex cardiac surgeries at the highest level.”
For Prof. Avi Morgan, Surgical Director of the Cardiac Mechanical Support Unit, the milestone reflects Sheba’s bold spirit of innovation: “Only a medical center with extraordinary vision and ability, like Sheba, is able to embrace innovation and translate it into life-saving successes. Saving our patients with the most advanced treatments in the world is possible thanks to all of Sheba’s medical teams, who work with dedication and tirelessness for the benefit of the patient.”
Dr. Eyal–Ran Nahum, Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Unit, praised the relentless collaboration that made the operation possible: “This is an exciting and unique event that was successful mainly thanks to the exceptional cooperation of an extraordinarily dedicated and skilled multidisciplinary team who gave their time 24/7 to preserve the patient’s life and the success of his treatment.”
Prof. Yael Peled, Medical Director of the Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Cardiac Support Unit, spoke to the profound impact on the patient: “In many ways, we saved his life twice, the first time when he received a full artificial heart, and this time again, when he was transplanted with a human heart. This is an exciting moment that symbolizes the essence of our mission: to enable patients in critical situations to return to a full life.”
