Sheba Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology completed a collaborative clinical mission in Accra, Ghana, working closely with the medical staff of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to deliver patient evaluations, complex surgeries, and hands-on training.

The mission brought together three Sheba Global ophthalmologists, Dr. Ayelet Priel, Dr. Sharon Armarnik, and Dr. Or Gil, who partnered with the teams at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to further shared expertise in pediatric ophthalmology and oculoplastic care.

Joint Surgical Days Across Pediatric and Oculoplastics Care

The first day focused on patient evaluations and determining surgical management. Several cases required timely intervention and ongoing clinical dialogue, underscoring a collaborative process built on mutual learning, professional exchange, and shared decision-making.

After the assessments, the teams set a coordinated operative plan for the mission’s surgical days. This enabled smooth multidisciplinary work in adjacent operating rooms, one dedicated to pediatric ophthalmology and one to oculoplastic procedures, where several cases required combined involvement from both specialties.

During procedures, the team also collaborated in real time with a neuroradiologist at Sheba Medical Center for imaging interpretation when needed, reinforcing the mission’s integrated approach to high-quality patient care.

Hands-on Training and Shared Academic Exchange

Training was a core focus of the mission, with residents and fellows participating in both diagnostic and surgical procedures. The shared academic environment supported growth for all participants and strengthened professional ties between the institutions. As one team member noted, the collaboration “enriched all participants and strengthened our connection to our colleagues in Ghana.”

Diplomatic and Cultural Connections During the Visit

During the mission, the team met with the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana to discuss goals, share impressions, and highlight Sheba Global’s broader role in international medical outreach. This mission reflects the impact of collaborative medicine and shared clinical expertise. Patient care, surgery, training, and cultural connection made the experience meaningful for all involved. We look forward to staying connected with our colleagues in Ghana and carrying forward the spirit of this collaboration.
