Bahir Dar is one of the largest and fastest-growing towns in Ethiopia, and Gondar has one of the largest populations in the country.
The demographic changes in both cities, along with the increased prevalence of chronic illnesses and disabilities, have necessitated a significant improvement in local healthcare.
In early July 2022, Prof. Elhanan Bar-On, Director of Sheba’s Humanitarian and Disaster Response Center, flew to Ethiopia to visit two teaching hospitals in Gondar and Bahir Dar. Prof. Bar-On was accompanied by medical staff from Beilinson Hospital, which included orthopedic surgeons, a nurse, and a physiotherapist.
The Israeli team arrived with the aim of improving clinical skills, knowledge, and work processes within the local hospitals to foster a sustainable increase in patient intake and help improve care delivery. In addition to lectures and workshops, the team trained local surgeons in the latest surgical techniques.

Following the visit, Sheba plans to continue and expand its training activities in Ethiopia in the fields of orthopedics, trauma, and neonatology – sending teams for on-site training, as well as training Ethiopian healthcare professionals at Sheba.
