Proud to Be a “Light Unto the World”

There is a saying that one can find ‘current events’ in every weekly Torah reading. Ironically, this past week (the story of Noah and the Flood), one could find the word “Hamas” (chaos), as well as the creation of the different nations that started to scatter all over the Earth in the aftermath of both the flood and the ensuing chaos in Babylon (Iraq).

Much to our chagrin, the world is still in “Hamas” in more ways that we can imagine.

But through it all, Sheba Medical Center has remained a beacon of hope and a light unto the world, representing the best that the nation of Israel has to offer.

Moments after we turned out the lights in the temporary returning hostage center last week, we inaugurated the new Azrieli Cardiovascular Center in that very same facility, where patients will be receiving some of the most advanced care in the world. As Professor Yitshak Kreiss, Dir. General of Sheba remarked at the official grand opening last week, “This building represents how we are transitioning from despair to hope.”

The nations of the world also continue to flock to Sheba-from ambassadors to medical professionals and journalists alike, they are ‘hungry’ to see and understand how we are creating ground-breaking treatments and tech innovations for the benefit of humanity.

This week’s edition highlights emotional and thought-provoking videos, which focus on all of the aforementioned issues.

He explains that being HIV-positive means living with the virus, while AIDS refers to a stage of severe immune system damage in which the body can no longer fight off everyday infections.
