Rays of Light & Hope at Annual Sheba Event

It was the ‘hottest’ ticket in town. Over 1200 people attended what would have ordinarily been our annual festive gala. But 8 plus months of mayhem and war dimmed the prospects of holding a true celebration. And yet, Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, Director General of Sheba wished to transform the annual event into a tribute to our heroic soldiers, brave civilians, returned hostages and to our indomitable staff, which provided true rays of light of hope to all of aforementioned 24/7.

Yes, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, as both recovering soldiers and civilians retold their personal encounters with members of the Sheba medical staff, some of whom also tossed their Sheba outfits aside and donned IDF uniforms to treat wounded soldiers on the Gaza battlefield.

President Isaac Herzog lauded the medical staff for their unprecedented devotion to the battle to save lives around the clock and then returning them to a sense of normalcy amidst the madness.

Perhaps the most compelling moment came when Professor Kreiss told the miraculous story of the Golan family from Kfar Aza, all of whom were nearly burned to death by Hamas terrorists on October 7th. Ariel, Ellay and their baby Yael, were airlifted to Sheba in critical condition. But it was Ellay, an aspiring doctor in training at Soroka, who suffered the most severe burns, as she cradled her baby in the inferno. Her life hung in the balance for several months. Sheba’s renowned Burn Unit was able to save her life (along with her husband and baby), eventually transferring her to our renowned Returning to Life Rehabilitation Hospital.

On Suday evening, Prof. Kreiss called Ellay to the stage, and while cradling her beautiful, healthy baby, Prof. Kreiss presented Ellay with a Sheba medical employee card, as she will complete her medical internship, as a member of the Sheba staff!

An unforgettable, ‘heart-stopping’ moment amidst the chaos that the people of Israel continue to endure on a daily basis.
