Recently, a delegation from Sheba Medical Center embarked on two important humanitarian missions, extending the hospital’s expertise in neonatology, pediatric orthopedics, and disaster response. Teams traveled to both Ethiopia and Togo, reflecting Sheba’s dedication to advancing global health and fostering international partnerships.
The missions to Ethiopia and Togo reflect a simple yet powerful truth: healing has no borders. By standing side by side with communities across the world, Sheba Medical Center demonstrates that medicine is not only about treatment but also about hope, unity, and shared humanity.

Advancing Neonatal and Orthopedic Care in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, Sheba Medical Center continued its collaboration with Bahir Dar University Hospital, a long-term project aimed at strengthening neonatal and pediatric orthopedic care. On the neonatology side, Sheba’s doctors, Prof.Tzipi Strauss and Dr. Anna Shklovsky worked closely with local colleagues, providing advanced training, while also contributing to upgrading the neonatal and preterm department. Their efforts are enabling improved outcomes for newborns and premature infants by enhancing both knowledge and infrastructure.

In pediatric orthopedics, Prof. Elhanan Bar-On and Dr. Daniel Weltsch led a mission focused on professional training, surgeries, and creating sustainable pathways for ongoing remote support. The Sheba team enabled local medical staff to strengthen their expertise and ensure that children in the region gain access to advanced orthopedic care. Together, these efforts represent not only medical aid but also a meaningful exchange of knowledge, designed to build stronger health systems for the future.

Humanitarian Mission in Togo

At the same time, the Humanitarian and Disaster Response Center of Sheba, under the leadership of Dr. Shachar Shapira, launched a mission in Togo. Working alongside the Central Directorate of the Health Service of Togo, the team began exploring possible collaboration with hospitals across the country. In addition, discussions centered on identifying potential sites for medical facilities that will provide vital healthcare services in areas with significant needs.

This initiative marks another milestone in the historic friendship between Israel and Togo, deepening medical and humanitarian cooperation while laying the groundwork for long-term support.

The Broader Vision of Sheba Global

These missions highlight Sheba Medical Center’s broader vision of global partnership and medical innovation. By combining training programs, remote programs, and direct humanitarian response, Sheba continues to play a leading role in fostering better healthcare systems worldwide. The dedication of Sheba’s teams illustrates how sharing knowledge and professional collaboration can uplift entire communities. Through every training session, surgery, and partnership, Sheba is helping to shape a brighter, healthier future for generations to come, not only in Israel but also around the world.
