Sheba's ARC and Salignostics collaborate on a saliva-based test for early oral cancer detection, promising improved patient outcomes worldwide.

Located within Sheba Medical Center, ARC Innovation Center doesn’t only possess a dedication to innovation, advancements in medical technology and collaborations, but also to the individual patient’s experience and giving them a fighting chance toward the best outcome 100% of the time. By way of research and trial periods, ARC Innovation Center’s collaborations are always looking for a solution that further drives Sheba’s motto of “Hope Without Boundaries.”

The Global Impact of Oral Cancer

It has been estimated that 400,000 patients are diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer annually. Unfortunately, due to inefficient detection methods like biopsies, about 50% of them will only find out about their condition when it’s already too late for them. That’s an estimated loss of 200,000 lives that could have been completely prevented with early detections. This has led Sheba to look for an answer to this issue. Concurrently, other entities in healthcare shared the same concerns.

Hope In Salignostics

Specializing in saliva research, tech and business development, Salignostics is behind some of the most groundbreaking diagnostic innovations on the market today. They are best known for:

  • Salistick – A rapid pregnancy test like no other, which is completely saliva-based and can detect a pregnancy earlier than an average pregnancy test. This accurate kit is based on technology that detects pregnancy hormone β-hCG in saliva.
  • Salicov – This COVID-19 is a salvia-based home test that came into prominence back when the world was swept in an intercontinental pandemic. Without nose inversion or the presence of a medical professional, people could test themselves and get results that they could depend on within 15 minutes.

An Innovative Collaboration Against Oral Cancer

What Salignostics and ARC have in common is a shared vision where early and precise detection for oral cancer is readily available. It was this shared need that led to a partnership in the midst of developing a groundbreaking test that has the potential to change the landscape of cancer detection across multiple types.

The oral test they currently have in development has the ability to detect oral cancer with a single saliva swap. The results all come down to the salvia being swabbed from infected tissue within the mouth.

Leading the Charge In This Initiative

The medical professionals who are leading this initiative and putting the research in forward motion are Dr. Alex Dobriyan, the Director of Sheba’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Institute, Prof. Gidi Rechavi, the Director of Sheba’s Cancer Research Center, Dr. Eran Alon, the Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Sheba, and Prof. Iris Barshack, Sheba’s Head of the Institute of Pathology.

In regard to the forged cooperation between ARC and Salignostics, Dr. Dobriyan stated the following, “The potential for early detection of head and neck cancer in general, and oral cavity cancer in particular, is tremendous and may have a very significant impact on the ability of these complex patients to recover. The connection between Sheba’s leading head and neck team and Salignostics’ versatile and groundbreaking technology can bring great diagnostic news.”

A Brighter Future for Cancer Patients on the Horizon

The partnership between Sheba’s ARC Innovation Center and Salignostics marks a significant leap forward in cancer diagnostics, offering hope for a brighter future for patients worldwide. By combining Sheba’s expertise in patient care and Salignostics’ cutting-edge technology, this collaboration won’t only revolutionize early detection of oral cancer but potentially save countless lives. As research progresses, the development of this saliva-based diagnostic tool will pave the way for more accessible, non-invasive, and accurate cancer screenings, promoting more timely treatment and a better chance at recovery. The future of cancer care is on the horizon, and it’s filled with promise.

Understanding HIV, AIDS, and Prevention with Professor Itsik Levi

In a new “Doctor on Call” video, Professor Itsik Levi, director of the HIV and STDs clinic at Sheba Medical Center, addresses common questions about HIV and AIDS and highlights why early testing is so important. He explains that being HIV-positive means living with the virus, while AIDS refers to a stage of severe immune system damage in which the body can no longer fight off everyday infections.
