Prof. Ido Didi Fabian, Head of Sheba’s Global Ophthalmology Department, (SGO) hosted the first Coffee & Ophthalmology Roundtable, exploring critical global eye health challenges.
Prof. Ido Didi Fabian, Director of Sheba Global Ophthalmology (SGO), recently hosted the first Coffee & Ophthalmology Roundtable, an inaugural event he initiated, bringing together global leaders in ophthalmology to discuss key challenges in worldwide eye care. The event, organized by Dr. Fabian and the SGO Department, featured Prof. Hannah Faal, Chair of the African Vision Research Institute (AVRI), who shared her extensive experience in global eye health.
Global Eye Health Challenges
Prof. Faal’s presentation drew on her leadership in the 2020 Lancet Global Health Commission, which found that 596 million people suffer from distance vision impairment globally, and 43 million are blind. The session highlighted the significant issue of uncorrected near vision impairment, which affects 510 million people worldwide due to limited access to affordable eyewear.
Further discussions centered around VISION 2020: The Right to Sight, the global initiative Prof. Faal helped launch, which has been instrumental in eliminating avoidable blindness in underserved regions, particularly in Africa.
Advancing Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange
The roundtable was designed to foster global collaboration and knowledge exchange, bringing together leading ophthalmologists from around the world. Prof. Fabian’s efforts, along with Sheba Medical Center’s commitment to global ophthalmology, continue to pave the way for new insights and research, addressing the worldwide need for improved eye care.
