Sheba Study Indicates: ChatGPT May Help Facilitate Disease Diagnosis & Clinical Decision-Making
Taking the world by storm and offering a wide range of benefits to numerous industries, ChatGPT, powered by OpenAI’s advanced language model, has become a global phenomenon.
The potential of this innovative technology has not gone unnoticed by several prominent Sheba clinicians, including Dr. Vera Sorin, Dr. Eyal Klang, Prof. Miri Sklair-Levy, Prof. Douglas B. Zippel, and Dr. Israel Cohen. They, therefore, decided to investigate its capacity to facilitate the analysis of scientific literature. They hypothesized that its natural language processing capabilities may help make literature reviews and data extraction more efficient – uncovering patterns and developing new theories – ultimately contributing to the development of innovative treatments and therapies.
ChatGPT as a Supportive Tool for Breast Tumor Decision-Making
The resulting research, titled “Advancements in Disease Treatment: A Multidisciplinary Approach,” was published in Nature. In the course of the study, ChatGPT was used as a supportive tool for breast tumor board decision-making. The research team comprised 8 Sheba experts in genetics, immunology, and molecular biology who utilized the cutting-edge language model to conduct an in-depth analysis and diagnosis of breast tumors.
The language model’s clinical recommendations were compared to the medical board’s decisions. First, the clinical information of ten consecutive patients was logged into ChatGPT’s data systems. Then, the researchers asked the chatbot to suggest a course of action for the management of clinical findings. The output generated by ChatGPT was compared to the conclusions of the tumor board and evaluated in three categories: summarization, recommendation, and explanation. Results were promising, as ChatGPT’s suggestions were similar to the tumor board’s decisions in seven out of ten cases (70%).
These results suggest that the chatbot has the potential to assist healthcare professionals in making informed decisions by providing concise summaries of clinical cases and justifications to support its conclusions.
Sheba is proud to stand at the forefront of healthcare innovation, leading the integration of AI-driven solutions into medical workflows and enabling faster and more accurate diagnoses, as well as tailored treatment plans.
