Picture a moment of quiet dignity: an amputee independently putting on tefillin for the first time since the time of their injury. At Sheba Medical Center, this scene is becoming a reality. Together with ALYN Hospital, we've created a groundbreaking device that makes this deeply personal religious practice possible again. This joint effort embodies Sheba's vision of care, where patient needs inspire innovation and hope illuminates the way.
Amputees face unique challenges in daily life, especially when these challenges intersect with deeply held spiritual practices. One such challenge is putting on tefillin, a daily mitzvah that became difficult for Itay, a 26-year-old IDF soldier who lost part of his right arm in combat.

“I always dreamed of regaining full independence,” he said. “Putting on tefillin, a daily ritual,

became a challenge after my injury.”

Sheba Medical Center, in partnership with ALYN Hospital, has introduced a groundbreaking device tailored to meet the specific needs of amputees. Developed at Sheba by Milbat, a unit specializing in assistive technologies, this innovative solution seamlessly integrates halachic requirements with practical functionality. By securely stabilizing the tefillin during use, the device guarantees accurate placement on the arm, enabling amputees to fulfill the mitzvah with ease and independence.

Collaboration Across Disciplines

The success of this initiative lies in its interdisciplinary approach. Engineers, occupational therapists, and halachic consultants worked together to develop a tailored solution. “This is not an easy challenge,” explained Hila Borel in her interview with Ynet, director of ALYN Hospital’s team. It is impossible to offer a uniform solution that fits everyone, since each injury is different in its structure and each person faces unique limitations. We understood that this was a real need that required an innovative and creative approach, one that required cooperation between different fields of knowledge such as rehabilitation, engineering and halachic law.”

Einat Carmeli, director of the Sheba team, added: “The challenge was twofold: to find customized solutions that allow people with physical limitations to handle an action requiring delicate skill, and to maintain absolute fidelity to Halacha. For us, it is not just a technical solution, but also a mission.”

A Model for Innovation in Care

In the heart of medical innovation, Sheba Medical Center is writing a new chapter in patient care. Their groundbreaking initiative isn’t just about advancing technology – it’s about fundamentally changing how patients experience their healthcare journey. Inspired by the resilient spirit of veterans who refused to accept limitations, Sheba’s journey into innovation began with their determination to turn combat-forged strength into hope.
