In a profound display of solidarity, Gil Preuss, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, recently visited Israel to bring support and witness the immediate needs of the Israeli people. Preuss’s mission included delivering personal messages of encouragement to Israeli soldiers and engaging with frontline medical facilities providing critical care to those affected by the war.

Gil Preuss, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington (JFGW), demonstrated solidarity and support for Israel shortly after the devastating attacks from Hamas on October 7th. Bearing witness to the damage and turmoil, Preuss’s visit aimed to assess the destruction firsthand and express the support of the Washington Jewish community in these trying times.

During his time in Israel, he delivered hundreds of heartfelt letters from young members of the community to the Israeli soldiers, as well as met with a member of the Brothers and Sisters in Arms movement.

Preuss also visited Sheba, where he observed the medical center’s response to the sudden crisis, including the establishment of a new pediatric ICU within six hours to address the urgent needs arising from the conflict. He also visited the general ICU, meeting victims of the violence, both military and civilian, and witnessing the horrific impact of the war. Pruess then arrived at Sheba’s Rehabilitation Hospital, where soldiers and civilians receive comprehensive care for their wounds—both seen and unseen.

The Federation, inspired by such needs, is actively raising funds to support the well-being and recovery of those affected. This visit was a reflection of a deep-seated commitment to kinship and community outreach.

“We are part of one community, one people,” Preuss noted, emphasizing the importance of helping each other in times of need.
