Dr. Eran Alon, through a partnership between Sheba and the US-based Virtue Foundation, has trained Mongolian doctors, reaching 400 operations and significantly elevating local healthcare standards.

Annually, Sheba’s Director of the Department of Otolaryngology Dr. Eran Alon goes on a collaborative mission between Sheba and a US-based nonprofit Virtue Foundation to Mongolia to teach surgical techniques at the National Cancer Center in Ulaanbaatar, the country’s only cancer hospital.

Milestone in Mongolian Medical Training

What initially started as just four surgeons, has since expanded to 30 participants and a number of residents whom Dr. Alon invites experience and inspiration to join future trips. In the last 12 years, Dr. Alon has trained local Mongolian doctors in some extraordinarily complex procedures that were unheard of in the region. This year brings about a significant milestone in their ongoing mission, the 400th operation together.

Dr. Alon’s goal of providing Mongolia’s local medical community with the tools and skills to be empowered and independent, has clearly been reached. The standards of the local hospital are now on par with some of the world’s leading institutions.

Spreading Surgical Skills to Northern Mongolia

When talking about Mongolia’s medical community, Dr. Alon emphasizes the importance of working alongside the local doctors rather than performing the surgeries for them. He has taken the stance away from the country’s center and into the northern regions to hospitals where he can further teach his surgical techniques. This will ultimately serve to empower the nation and relieve some strain from the National Cancer Center of Mongolia.  We are honored to support Dr. Alon and the Virtue Foundation in their mission and eagerly anticipate the ongoing positive impact they will have on global healthcare.
