In the nine months since October 7th, there has unquestionably been a shift in Israeli society. We’ve been through a trauma that has both devastated our way of life, and has emboldened us and brought us closer together as a nation. This is most evident at the ‘Returning to Life’ rehabilitation unit at Sheba.
The Bonds Created in The ‘Returning to Life’ Unit
The bond between Sheba’s dedicated therapist and our injured soldiers has blossomed into something beautiful. Elroy, a recovering soldier who has been at Sheba for three and half months is the perfect example of this.
Sharing his experience, he stated, “People come here for rehabilitation and leave feeling better than we came. I feel stronger than before I was injured. There’s something special in this country. We stand and fight for the country we love. We are one family, we are together and we are strong. October 7th touched everyone, we all lost someone, every single person. We just want to protect our country and we do whatever we can to do that.”
Elroy’s Journey Toward Recovery at Sheba
Elroy has made incredible progress under the careful guidance of his occupational therapist, Sharon Werech. She spoke in depth, “We see so much bravery, patience, and drive. They go through a real journey here and it’s not easy. There is a lot of pain and also a lot of healing. And in the end, when we succeed, it’s all worth it. It’s hard work but they are like our children and we take care of them as such.”
As Elroy prepares to be discharged next week, he will continue to attend day treatments. His journey, along with the dedication of his therapists, exemplifies the strength and unity that define us. Together, we are one family, stronger than ever.
