Humanitarian Missions to Africa Make History!
How many hospitals in the world are capable of putting together 4 very different humanitarian missions to various parts of Africa in a single month?
Just as one team returned from Southern Nigeria earlier this month after treating dozens of children with eye cancer, another delegation from our Israel Center for Disaster Medicine and Humanitarian Response, led by Prof. Elhanan Bar-On, headed to Mombasa, Kenya for a first-ever joint mission with the U.S. 5th Fleet last weekend (see below). Kenya’s Ambassador to Israel, HE Lt. General Samuel Thuita, came to Sheba to thank Prof. Bar-On and the team for their contribution to improving Kenya’s medical capabilities. We will reveal many aspects of this unique mission in next week’s edition.
And just as this delegation heads back to Sheba on Friday, two more teams, led by Prof. Tzipi Strauss, head of Sheba’s Neonatal Unit, and Dr. Yoram Klein, Director of the Trauma Unit, will head to different parts of Ethiopia to upgrade that nation’s challenged healthcare systems.
A truly historic month indeed.
