Sheba Hosts First-of-its-Kind Pediatric Cancer Treatment Symposium for Healthcare Professionals from West Bank and Gaza

Despite the turmoil which has enveloped Israel, Sheba was an oasis of peace and humanity this week when the medical center hosted a first-of-its-kind pediatric cancer treatment symposium for Palestinian healthcare professionals from the West Bank and Gaza. The event, hosted in Sheba’s Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital, aimed to empower medical students and healthcare professionals from the region by highlighting the latest advances and innovations in cancer treatment, including CAR T-cell therapy, and outlining Sheba’s unique approach to pediatric cancer care.

“We are hosting our Palestinian colleagues not just to share with them the latest innovations and advancements in pediatric cancer treatment, but because collaboration with Palestinian physicians and health institutions is key to advancing healthcare in the region,” said Prof. Itai Pessach, Director of the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital. “We are committed to working together to make a meaningful difference to the lives of our patients, and theirs, and to promoting peace and cooperation in the field of medicine.”

Titled ‘Recent Advances in Cancer Treatment 2023,’ the symposium was attended by leading Sheba oncologists, and clinicians and healthcare providers from the West Bank and Gaza alongside senior figures from the Palestinian Authority Health Ministry. “This gathering marks a historic moment for Sheba Medical Center and for healthcare in the region. Today, we are starting a new journey together, one that will continue to strengthen the ties between us,” said Raied Baloum, Director of Regional Patient Services at Sheba Medical Center. “This event is a testament to our shared commitment to providing the best possible care to all patients. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of this collaboration in the years to come.”

Sheba Medical Center’s commitment to improving the health of those in the region is reflected in its ongoing collaboration with Palestinian institutions. In recent years, Sheba has partnered with Palestinian hospitals to provide specialized medical training and education. Sheba also provides telemedicine services to Palestinian hospitals and clinics in the West Bank, allowing doctors to consult with Sheba specialists on complex cases.
