The New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Transforming Infant Care for a Brighter Future

The  Need

Sheba’s NICU is one of the largest in the country, treating over 1000 critically ill infants annually, including extremely premature babies and babies with congenital malformations, metabolic disorders and more. Over the years the number of births at Sheba has doubled and the number of complex high-risk pregnancies and multiple births have markedly increased. Sheba’s present NICU was designed almost 3 decades ago and maintaining the highest standard of care Sheba is committed to providing has now become very challenging.

About the
New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The planned new 3,700 sq. m NICU, is designed and equipped for the optimal care of critically ill infants from birth until discharge home. The unit will comprise 3 unique separate areas, an intensive care unit, a step-down unit and a growing baby care unit, each specially designed to provide a pleasant, comfortable, stress free environment for the infants and their parents.
The security situation in Israel demands that the ICU section of the structure be built to the highest standard of safety using reinforced concrete, so that in times of war or missile attacks the babies will not have to be moved to the protected shelters and treatment can be continued in a safe and secure environment.

The Project

The NICU will provide critically ill infants with the highest level of care to ensure that the most vulnerable infants are provided with the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. Our multidisciplinary team of dedicated medical professionals work together using the most advanced technologies to provide the best possible clinical care whilst supporting the emotional needs of the families with compassion and understanding.
