The New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Transforming Infant Care for a Brighter Future

The  Need

Sheba’s neonatal intensive care unit was designed three decades ago and is one of the largest in the country and is the main referral center for difficult and complex cases that require expert medical and surgical care that span from births, congenital heart disease, gastrointestinal and brain malformations, metabolic disorders, and more.

About the
New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Over the years, the number of births at Sheba Medical Center has doubled and the number of high risk pregnancies and multiple births has also increased considerably. Maintaining the high standard of care Sheba is committed to providing is now, unfortunately, very challenging.

In light of the above, it becomes clear that Sheba’s needs warrant immediate action. The security situation in Israel demands that the entire structure be built to the highest level of safety using reinforced concrete, so that in times of war or missile attacks the babies will not have to be moved to the protected shelters, and treatment can be continued in an optimal and safe environment.

The Project

The NICU will provide critically ill infants with optimal care and ensure them a positive outcome and will encourage parents to be involved in their child’s care and development.

Phototherapy

Enabling doctors to more easily tackle jaundice, intravenous treatment and antibiotic therapies.

Close Monitoring of Preterm Infants

Following discharge, preterm infants; growth and progress will be monitored until they are around 2 kg and 36 weeks corrected gestational age. Parents will also receive support and guidance regarding the transition from hospital to home.

Single and Twin Rooms

This unit will house both single and twin rooms so parents can be with their critically ill infant at all times.
