Born@Sheba: Sheba-Nuvo Partnership Transforms High-Risk Pregnancy Care with AI Remote Monitoring
New technology developed by the Nuvo Group, which has been tested and used extensively at Sheba Medical Center, allows women with high-risk pregnancies to monitor themselves from the comfort of their own homes through the Sheba Beyond Virtual Hospital.
Yuval Alfital is one such woman. She requires daily fetal monitoring, a process that would normally require her to be in the maternity ward around the clock. Instead, she only has to come to Sheba twice a week.
“The Sheba Beyond telehealth center allows me to continue my life’s normal routine. I can continue living and seeing my family. It really reduces all the pressure and the stress that builds up over the pregnancy, and I am very thankful for that,” Yuval said.
The partnership between Sheba and the Nuvo Group enables patients like Yuval to use remote fetal monitors daily from home. These devices, manufactured by Nuvo, are integrated into the High-Risk Pregnancy Department led by Dr. Avi Tsur, Director of the Women’s Health Innovation Center and Deputy Chief Transformation Officer. Each device connects to an app on the patient’s phone, allowing real-time communication with midwives or doctors who monitor the results the Nuvo device records.
But the technology goes far beyond simple monitoring—it is learning.
“We are developing machine learning models (artificial intelligence) to predict and prevent major pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction,” said Dr. Avi Tsur. “For example, with preeclampsia, we improved prediction of it and improved precision, which means we can detect which women are at risk and won’t respond to simple interventions.”
By identifying complications early, pregnant women can receive targeted interventions, reducing the need for Caesarean sections and enabling quicker, less painful recoveries.
Dr. Tsur’s goal is to make Sheba a central hub for high-risk pregnancy remote monitoring in Israel. By ensuring the process is simple enough to manage from home, he aims to eliminate the life-disrupting long-term hospitalizations traditionally associated with high-risk pregnancies.
The result: more natural births, fewer complications, and healthier outcomes—a win for everyone involved.
