Sheba's strategic collaboration with FIDF amplifies trauma care nationwide, meeting urgent needs and enhancing mental health support for soldiers facing unprecedented challenges.

Following the October 7th attacks and the subsequent war, medical professionals across the nation anticipated an overwhelming influx of soldiers and terror victims with severe physical and psychological injuries. Professor Amitai Ziv, MD, MHA, Director of Sheba’s ‘Returning to Life’ Rehabilitation unit immediately foresaw a need to expand Sheba’s reach across the nation to the regions in most need.

Stressing the importance of taking quick action, Prof. Ziv stated, “We are at a critical point in time where therapeutically we have a window of opportunity of several months to effectively intervene in patients with ASD (Acute Stress Disorder) and prevent deterioration into chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Sheba & FIDF: A Shared Commitment

On February 1, Sheba established a partnership with Friends of the Israel Defense Force (FIDF). This synergy will increase the capacity of Sheba’s trauma treatment network across the nation by 50%. Funds will be issued to pre-existing IDF veteran rehabilitation facilities, especially in the southern and northern regions. Prof. Ziv commented on the partnership saying, “The joint effort of Sheba and FIDF, made possible by this partnership, will allow us to swiftly respond to the numerous affected individuals, providing them with timely therapeutic interventions.”

Expanding Trauma Care Nationally

Additionally, Sheba and FIDF’s joint effort will make it possible for individuals in the northern and southern regions to get adequate mental health care without having to travel far from their homes. This initiative also aims to significantly bolster Israel’s healthcare system’s ability to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This will be accomplished by way of training and providing the knowledge, tools and technologies to additional therapists.

Steve Weil, CEO of FIDF went on to comment on this collaborative effort, stating, “When hundreds of thousands of Israel’s courageous soldiers were called to service more than three months ago, we recognized the gravity of what they would face and the potential trauma they would endure, and therefore mobilized to find macro solutions across the nation for IDF soldiers and their families. We are humbled to partner with world-renowned Sheba Medical Center in providing the best possible care for the heroes who make inconceivable sacrifices for the safety and security of Israel.”
